The local chapter is committed to improving the health and wellness of those we serve. We have instituted a number of internal and external activities that increase awareness across generations of the health issues and chronic diseases impacting Mississippi and the African American community and provide opportunities for members of our community to “get active” for healthier lifestyles. The chapter supports a number of organizational “walks” including Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Diabetes Walks. Additionally, we support a number of partnering organizations, including the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.
The chapter partnered with community partners for the Go Red event to bring awareness to heart health. The event focused on Heart Health for Women of Color and the impact of high blood pressure during and after pregnancy. The event provided information on healthy eating, exercise, mental health during pregnancy and provided access to resources to support heart health among women across the lifespan.
The chapter partnered with a local organization for the Teen Suicide Summit: You Matter to bring awareness to the high rate of suicide with teens and young adults. The summit focused on the importance of mental health, suicide prevention, impact of bullying, faith and spirituality, coping skills and mental health resources.
