International Awareness and Involvement

INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS AND INVOLVEMENT

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. holds the issues of the international community close to her heart. Chapters across the world simultaneously recognize and act upon the major concerns that plague countries around the globe such as the water crisis in Africa. The Madison County (MS) Alumnae Chapter hosts workshops to enlighten the public on what can be done to assist others around the planet. Our chapter has executed programs for the International Day of Service and World AIDS Day, and we provide outreach to the international community. Our programs have donated much needed supplies, clothing, and shoes that are provided to citizens beyond our US borders.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, holds special significance for our chapter, as we partner with local organizations like Holmes Community College to coordinate a comprehensive program focused on HIV/AIDS advocacy and awareness. This program aims to educate the community about the impact of HIV/AIDS, provide resources for those affected, and promote prevention efforts.

Throughout the event, we offer a variety of activities designed to engage and inform the public. These include interactive workshops, Facebook Live panel discussions, and free HIV testing, all aimed at increasing awareness and encouraging proactive health measures. Our chapter also actively supports advocacy campaigns, such as the “Hands Up” Prevention initiative, which focuses on preventing the spread of HIV through education and community involvement.

To further enhance the program, we invite guest speakers who bring diverse perspectives and expertise. These speakers include healthcare professionals who share the latest medical advancements and treatment options, community leaders who discuss the broader social impact of the disease, resource providers who offer practical support and services, and individuals living with HIV who bravely share their personal stories. These contributions provide valuable insights and up-to-date statistics on HIV/AIDS, with a particular focus on its effects within our communities, especially among young African Americans.

Through these efforts, our chapter not only commemorates World AIDS Day but also plays an active role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, working to reduce stigma, increase knowledge, and support those living with the disease.

School Supply Drive

The chapter remains committed to finding new ways to support Madison County Schools, continually seeking opportunities to address the needs of students and their families. Recognizing the growing needs of the large immigrant population in Madison County, the International Awareness and Involvement (IAI) committee spearheaded a thoughtful initiative to provide essential resources for these students. The committee organized a collection drive to gather school supplies, uniforms, and socks, ensuring that students in need have the necessary items to succeed in their educational journey.

This initiative not only aimed to alleviate the financial burden on families but also to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds who may face additional challenges. By providing these resources, the chapter is helping to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive in school, regardless of their economic circumstances. This ongoing support reflects the chapter's dedication to fostering educational equity and strengthening the community as a whole.
